Week 1 of TPTE 486!

This week was the first full week of TPTE and I think this week was good for me because I became acquainted with MAC and just with the numerous sites we will be using for the remainder of the course. This week we did a lot of account setting up and getting used it. This was beneficial for me because I am not previously a gmail account/email/reader/blogger etc. user. Also, I was nervous about the WIKI so it was nice to be able to play around with that. So, in reflection, I was thankful for this week of previewing and setting up. Another thing I enjoyed from this week is being separated into our licensure areas. I am used to working with elementary people and it is nice to be working with people you have things in common with, such as area of study. I think that this week was a good beginning.

  1. Chloe,

Setting up online accounts can be tedious! For that reason alone, it is nice to have one Google account because so many of the Google tools have educational implications and uses. All you need is one account! That said, a lot of school systems offer specific web tools and software for use in the classroom, so the decision is largely made for you. The important thing is not to get "married" to one tool. Learning to just "play around with" the tools is essential. We must give ourselves time to do this, just as we need to give our students time to explore new things.

What if you wanted to use these tools with young learners? What would you have to do to set them up for success (and safety) online? I think the prospect of doing this turns off a lot of educators, but it can be done. It takes a lot of preplanning and organizing to get kids online -- you can see in our class how overwhelming the process is for adult learners!
